The Mustard Seed provides basic services—food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Position Summary

As a member of the overnight relief team, this staff person will have a broad working knowledge of all areas of The Mustard Seed’s services.

At Westwood Manor:  The Relief Housing Support Worker (Over Night) provides frontline support and is often the first point of contact for residents, staff and visitors. Required shifts are 8 to 12 hours in duration dependent on the day of the week and location. This position is fast paced and candidate must be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining professionalism. Primary to this role is the monitoring of building access through encoded key FOB’s, and the overseeing of activities within and around the property. Other roles include; managing phone calls, documenting ETO entries, recording incident reports and completing logs/guest registers.  Safety/Security patrols are also required within and around the property to ensure optimal service, client security and a sense of community in the building. 

At the Shelter:  Reporting to the Shelter Team Lead, the Relief Shelter Support Worker (Over Night) works closely with Mustard Seed guests accessing the shelter mat program, encouraging them in their journey and directing them to Mustard Seed programs and services.  The Support Staff fulfills the mission of The Mustard Seed’s Ministry by maintaining a high level of professionalism, respect and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community participants and visitors. Shelter Support Workers respond to guest needs on an ongoing basis and ensure they are supported and cared for. Crisis intervention and conflict resolution are daily occurrences for this role. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fulfill the mission and values of The Mustard Seed and maintain a high level of  professionalism, respect and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community members and visitors
  • Provide crisis intervention and support as required
  • Manage conflict and provide crisis intervention as required
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g. First Aid, SafeTALK, Nonviolence) and attend monthly general meetings and support meetings with supervisor
  • Other duties and site related duties may be assigned when required
  • At Westwood Manor:
    • Work directly with residents in permanent supportive housing by providing care
    • Work closely with Housing Support Workers to provide critical information on client care and support through accurate ETO data input and maintenance of client records
    • Maintain the safety and security of the housing environment
    • Respond to crises in a professional, calm, and supportive manner
    • Supervise Westwood Manor building access; which includes key FOB control
    • Logging visitors in and out of the building
    • Provide a visible and attentive security presence in the building by perceiving and responding to opportunities with a goal of optimizing safety and building community
    • Monitor resident, staff and visitor activities in and around the building
    • Proactively communicate and collaborate with other Housing Support Staff to ensure continuity of service
    • Conduct security patrols, complete logs and prepare reports as required
    • Maintain confidentially with all client information
    • Weekend shifts are 12 hours long which potentially can be divided into 6 hour segments
  • At the Shelter:
    • As the first point of contact for guests seeking shelter, support the dignity of our guests by seeking to identify their needs in a respectful manner
    • Encourage guests to seek resources and services that support guests in achieving their goals
    • Respond to crises in a professional, calm, and supportive manner
    • Be a supportive and proactive team-mate to fellow support staff and volunteers
    • Provide person centered support and care to guests in a flexible way which meets their needs
    • Use initiative to assess situations and make appropriate decisions to support guests
    • Provide and maintain a safe, clean environment for respite, for up to 40 adult guests
    • Collect data and maintain accurate records, including incident reports
    • Respect proper boundaries with guests
    • Shifts are 10 hour-long evening, awake shifts, scheduled from 9pm to 7am
    • This position is often fast-paced, and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
    • This position requires the training and use of two-way radio communications and MS Office based programs

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate
  • A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending homelessness in Alberta is essential
  • Organizational skill and ability to carry all and delivery of front line programs
  • Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills
  • A proactive and self-starter individual
  • A team player, who works collaboratively and has a ‘teachable spirit’         
  • Good knowledge of data base entry (ETO, MS Word and Excel) is required
  • Ability to work independently and in a cross-functional team
  • Integrity, discretion and tact dealing with confidential matters
  • Knowledge of mental illness and addictions is an asset
  • First Aid, Non-violent Crisis Intervention and Suicide Intervention Training an asset
  • Familiarity with data entry, Excel and Outlook and ability to respond to emails in a timely manner
  • Experience working in a fast pace environment

Other Information

  • This is a relief casual position and hours will vary from week to week and no guaranteed minimum hours or shifts
  • Overnights during the week and weekends including stat holidays shifts are required and on short notice
  • The position will require ongoing compassionate care, frequent manual labor, conflict resolution and organizational ability while working directly with clients at risk and in life recovery
  • This position requires high mental and emotional effort, must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution, work directly with clients at risk
  • Moderate physical effort: considerable periods of standing, walking, cleaning, sorting and typing indoors and outdoors. Must have ability to lift up to 25 - 50 lbs
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Check and  Employment Security Check is required
