Position Description

Hillsburgh Baptist Church (HBC) is seeking a part time, bi-vocational pastor who is flexible and easy going, with the ability to minister to a small church. A fitting candidate would be a visionary leader with a drive to grow the kingdom of God. Our ideal candidate would be a pastor with a Master of Divinity degree (or equivalent) with a drive to serve the Lord through preaching, teaching, pastoral care, evangelism and organizational leadership to our congregation.  We hope that you make it a priority to actively seek the will of God through prayer, have a strong desire to teach, study and live by God's Word. A desire to be a part of our community  is of utmost importance. Our minister would be a sincere and caring person who possesses a heart for God to provide guidance, care and assistance to others. Our key goals are to reach out to the community and grow the church by showing the love of God. 

This position opening is tentatively effective beginning of October. This is a part-time solo pastoral role for an established church in the rural growing community of Hillsburgh, Ontario.

Overview of Church and Community:

HBC has been a solid presence in the community, serving Christ since 1853. Hillsburgh is a community of about 1200 people, within the town of Erin (11,000). Hillsburgh is becoming more diverse with many of its’ population commuting to the GTA. Our vision is one of hope: providing fellowship, worship, discipleship, Christian education and love through passionate service to the community and beyond. HBC is located approximately 20-40 minute drive from Guelph, Georgetown, Erin and Orangeville.     

The church is a small sized congregation of approximately 30-50 people. Our previous interim pastor left in June 2023 to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Chaplain.

Qualifications/Education:

  • We are looking for a person with some ministry experience who is called by God, recognized by CBOQ and is ordained or working towards ordination. Interested candidates should have the following qualifications: 
  • Good communicator, sensitive leader, well organized individual who spends quality time with the Lord and has a sense of humour
  • Trustworthy, Truthful, Loyal, Enthusiastic, Compatibility, Flexible, Open to New Ideas
  • Preaching, Theology, Discipleship training/teaching, Leadership development, Pastoral Care Giver, Seniors Sensitive, Visiting, Family Ministry, Children, Youth, Adults, Worship, Association & Denomination Work, Inter-Church Co-operation
  • Experience in difficult situations, proven leadership with full spectrum of ages within a church family and providing spiritual leadership within a community-based ministry
  • Denominational Requirements: Strong ties to BCOQ/Association
  • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Board of Deacons, the Pastor will provide specific support in the following areas:
  • Provide a solid Bible-based preaching and teaching ministry to meet the varied generational needs of the congregation and attract new members
  • Administer the Ordinances
  • Encourage and nurture the spiritual development/discipleship of the congregation through regular Bible study
  • Lead and inspire the church board and congregation in the development/vision and effective operation of program activities
  • Provide pastoral support and spiritual care to congregants and their families  in times of crisis, ministering to the sick, dying and bereaved and regular visitation
  • Conduct weddings, funerals, providing appropriate preparation and support
  • As the needs of our church change and grow, so will the role of the Bi-Vocational Pastor, according to God's leading. 

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to explain and apply Scripture to be relevant to our daily lives, preaching, theology, discipleship training/teaching, leadership development
  • Community-minded - visiting, family ministry, children, youth, adults, worship, connecting -  hospital visitation, visits to seniors and others in need association & denomination work, inter-church co-operation 
  • Good communicator, sensitive leader, well-organized individual who spends quality time with the Lord and has a sense of humour
  • Trustworthy, truthful, loyal, enthusiastic, compatibility, flexible, open to new ideas
  • Good interpersonal skills and relations for a diverse population 
  • Desire to increase church attendance/membership
  • Strong ties to CBOQ Association
  • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent   
  • Use of technology (online services)
  • Musical skill welcomed and encouraged
