Position Description

Job Title: Communications Director

Reports to: Executive Director

At UrbanPromise Toronto, we believe in the power of effective communication to drive our mission forward. We are dedicated to reaching children in Toronto Community Housing neighbourhoods with the love of Jesus and raising them into leaders who restore their community.

Overview: We seek a dynamic and experienced Communications Director to lead our organization's Development Team. You will be responsible for amplifying our impact through various channels, developing and implementing fundraising initiatives and events, and play a pivotal role in grant writing.

Key Responsibilities

Communications (30%):

Collaborate and lead the team to gather stories, pictures, videos and information about our communities for external and internal communications for our:

  • Quarterly Newsletters
  • Social Media
  • Website
  • Monthly Emails
  • Church Relations
  • Mission Teams
  • Annual Impact Reports

Events Management (30%):

  • Plan, organize, and execute fundraising events and donor appreciation activities.
  • Coordinate logistics, secure venues, and manage event budgets.
  • Collaborate with the Development Team to ensure events align with fundraising goals and strategies.

Grant Writing and Fund Development (15%):

  • Research grant opportunities and assess their suitability for the organization's programs and initiatives.
  • Write compelling grant proposals and grant reports, adhering to funder requirements and deadlines.
  • Cultivate relationships with grant-making organizations and represent the organization in grant-related communications.
  • Assist in developing and executing a targeted planned giving program.
  • Research, cultivate and recommend major gift prospects.
  • In collaboration with the Development team, develop and implement strategies for the acquisition, cultivation, solicitation, and retention of donors.
  • In collaboration with the Development Team, ensure that all donors are thanked in a timely manner.

Strategic Planning (15%):

  • Meet weekly with the Leadership Team
  • Lead and support weekly staff gatherings
  • Produce an annual plan for all UPT external communications
  • Produce an annual budget for communications and fundraising
  • Research information about Toronto Community Housing to build a case for support
  • Compile ministry impact data for board reports, website and newsletters

Promotions (10%):

  • Design and produce promotional materials for UPT events
  • Design or produce promotional materials for staff recruitment, donations and ministry description   
  • Oversee promotional and testimonial video productions

Staff responsibilities

Attend staff training, retreats and events

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in communications, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful communication strategies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project management and organizational abilities.
  • Experience in events management and grant writing within the nonprofit sector.
