Position Description

Position Summary

To attend to the health, safety, and spiritual welfare of Foundations campers and to assist them in maximizing their enjoyment and benefit from the camping experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Care and Supervision: Foundations Counselors will work with one other counselor and are required to care for and supervise their campers throughout the day for each camp session. Attention will be given to campers’ physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social needs within the context of a camp environment and cabin group.
  • Behaviour Management: Foundations Counselors will be required to appropriately and effectively manage, handle and solve problem behaviour as it arises.
  • Program Leadership: Each Foundations Counselor will be required to assume a great range of leadership roles in the implementation of the daily Foundations program. This includes: theme day skits, activity planning, small group planning and campfire participation.
  • Lifestyle Evangelism: Foundations Counselors must demonstrate a keen interest in children and camp ministry. Our evangelism strategy requires counselors who are able to share a vibrant Christian faith willingly to others. Foundations Counselors must have the ability to clearly share the gospel message with campers.
  • Service Responsibilities: The Foundations Counselor’s job is to guide the spiritual formation and leadership development of the campers under their care with skill and effectiveness. A lot of self-direction and creativity is required in this mentoring program.
  • Foundations Evaluations: Foundations Counselors will evaluate each Foundations camper once a week. They are responsible for ensuring that cabin counselors also evaluate Foundations Campers in a timely and appropriate manner each week.

Qualifications

  • Desire to build relationship and care for needs of children & youth Ability to positively influence, motivate and instruct youth spiritually, emotionally, socially and intellectually.
  • Positive approaches to problem solving are a critical skill to teach and uphold.
  • Experience working with individuals and groups of children and youth of various ages and abilities.
  • Knowledge of development stages and behaviour management.
  • Ability to perform some spontaneous and individual programming.
  • Ability to sustain the physical demands of an outdoor residential camp setting.
  • Conscientious in matters of personal ethics and lifestyle.
  • Ability to relate to and work well with peers as well as the ability to supervise others
  • Ability to perform some spontaneous and individual programming
  • We require absolute confidentiality regarding campers, as well as personal and professional integrity in matters of relationship, programs and work ethic.
  • A staff person’s lifestyle must be consistent with biblical standards and Christian values at all times.
  • Must work within and support The Scott Mission’s Christian Statement of Faith, Goals and Objectives
