Position Description

Position Summary:

Oversee all financial aspects of our organization. The Finance Manager will play a crucial role in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of our ministry as we continue to expand our impact across Canada. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in finance, exceptional leadership abilities, and a passion for our mission and vision. They will maintain accurate and timely general ledgers, perform advanced and specialized accounting assignments usually of a highly involved and confidential nature, obtain, analyze, and consolidate multiple department information, prepare reports and statements. The Finance Manager will be the primary contact for the external auditors during the annual audit.

Essential Functions:

  1. Responsible for the accurate accounting (recording and reporting) of financial activity relating to Our Daily Bread Ministries Canada.
  2. Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management and financial reporting.
  3. Ensure adherence to the financial controls established by Our Daily Bread Ministries Canada to safeguard assets and mitigate financial risks.
  4. Conduct periodic reviews and audits to ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
  5. Analyze financial data to present reports and strategic recommendations to the executive team and board of directors, providing insights into the organization’s financial health and performance.
  6. Collaborate with senior management to develop annual budgets and long-term financial strategies that support organizational growth and sustainability in line with the organization’s mission and objectives.
  7. Maintain financial models, forecasts, and budgets to support strategic decision-making.
  8. Identify trends, perform cost-benefit analysis, and recommend improvements to enhance profitability.
  9. Preparation of G/L, trial balance and other supporting workpapers/documents for annual audit, and working with auditors through entire process each year.
  10. Review deposit totals and compare with CRM member activity, review invoices prior to payment, review of credit card transactions for proper allocations.
  11. Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and statements.
  12. Reconcile bank accounts monthly along with debit/credit/electronic donations.
  13. Prepare and post month-end journal entries.
  14. Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations, tax laws, and accounting standards.
  15. Prepare and file appropriate governmental reports, tax payments, and PSB rebates.
  16. Stay up-to-date on federal, provincial, and local labour laws, tax regulations, and payroll-related compliance requirements.
  17. Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll for all employees, including regular staff, contractors, and consultants.
  18. Oversee payroll software or systems used for processing payroll, ensuring they are efficient, reliable, confidential, secure, and compliant with organizational needs and regulatory requirements.
  19. Maintenance of fixed assets
  20. Manage grant funding, including (but not limited to) proposal development, budgeting, reporting and compliance with grant requirements.

Study or Knowledge and Experience

  • Graduate degree in accounting; CPA experience required.
  • Seven to ten years’ experience in the accounting field, including three years’ experience in a similar position of financial responsibility. Experience with public accounting office an asset.
  • Experience managing audits and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in the use of financial systems like Blackbaud Financial Edge, Microsoft Business Central, etc. Includes: 1) Fluent in use and function of systems; 2) Able to run and analyze data; and 3) Assist other staff with operation of these systems.
  • Experience in preparing financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and grant reporting.  Knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data, analyze trends, and provide insights to support decision-making.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present financial information effectively to diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and address financial challenges proactively.
  • Able to work independently and make decisions.
  • Good interpersonal skills; self-motivated.
  • Understanding of Canadian non-profit law and charity requirements
  • Strive to live a life consistent with Biblical principles and demonstrate continued growth and spiritual development.

Internal Work Environment

  • Involves complex communication with individuals/groups throughout the organization. Clear and concise communication is essential.
  • Must be capable of diplomatic partnership communication with all ministry team(s) and affiliated offices globally.
  • Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in all matters.

External Work Environment

  • Communication consists of auditors, vendors, CRA/tax authorities, bank and investment representatives, etc. 
  • Topics are often complex and sensitive.
  • Travel to USA required.  Potential travel to affiliate offices in other countries.

Stewardship of Resources

  • Responsible for the accuracy, completeness and consistency of accounting information entered into the accounting system. The accuracy of this information has significant influence on departmental/organizational financial decision making.
  • Reviews the appropriateness of expenditures and is responsible for coordinating the presentation of our combined financial statement and tax returns.

Miscellaneous notes for consideration:

  • Work in a secure environment which requires a background check and police clearance as a part of the employment contract.  A confidentiality agreement is also required to conform to privacy policies.
  • Should be comfortable with their faith and biblical knowledge.
  • Participate in daily devotional discussion and prayer time.
