Architectural Design Lead

Hayhoe Homes is a land development and home construction company building single detached, semi-detached, and townhouse units. Hayhoe Homes currently builds between 200 and 300 units each year. The Architectural Design Team at Hayhoe Homes is responsible for the architectural design of buildings, building code compliance, and preparation of working drawings used to complete construction. The Architectural Design Lead will manage a current team of four people, although the size of the team may grow as the company grows. Management of this team will include assigning tasks according to team member aptitudes, developing the skills of current team members, tracking deliverables, completing final reviews of completed drawings, and addressing code compliance questions from field staff or municipal officials.

Required skills and experience in this role include:

• Three-year diploma in architectural technology or a similar degree.
• Minimum five years’ experience in residential architectural design in Ontario; minimum ten years’ experience is preferred.
• BCIN certification in at least General Legal and House and/or Small Buildings.
• Ability to design new house plans in consideration of efficient use of space, HVAC and structural design, aesthetics, and building code compliance.
• Ability to read and interpret municipal zoning regulations.
• Ability to interpret grading information on site plans and design houses to suit site grading requirements.
• Ability to work with land surveyors, truss designers, HVAC designers, and structural engineers to both design new models and prepare full building permit applications.
• Strong understanding of Part 9 of the Ontario Building Code and its application to residential architectural design.
• Experience in SoftPlan (the design software used by Hayhoe Homes); applicants who have experience in other software (ie. AutoCAD) will be considered but will be required to learn SoftPlan.

Architectural design tasks at Hayhoe Homes generally consist of two categories: design of new models, and preparation of full building permit applications using pre-designed models. Hayhoe Homes places a high standard on the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, functionality, and aesthetics of architectural designs. The Architectural Design Lead will be responsible for maintaining this high standard in design.

Hayhoe Homes is strategically positioning itself in the market to facilitate growth in the coming years. Some of this growth will include expanding into new built forms, including back-to-back and stacked townhouse buildings. The Architectural Design Lead will be responsible for managing the research and design of new built forms.

The Architectural Design Lead will report to the Vice-President, Operations. The Vice-President, Operations will provide training and strategic direction, but the Architectural Design Lead will have the autonomy and responsibility to take initiative in the leading and development of the Architectural Design Team at Hayhoe Homes.
