Fort Smith is a vibrant community located in the NWT with a population of approximately 2,500 people. It is located on the traditional territory of Salt River First Nation, Smiths Landing First Nation, and Metis people. Fort Smith is a diverse community that draws individuals and families with educational, recreational, and employment opportunities. The town of Fort Smith is nestled on the banks of the Slave River and is the gateway to Wood Buffalo National Park and all its beauty!

Fort Smith Pentecostal Church is a small, self-supporting congregation of diverse denominational and ethnic backgrounds. As a local church, we strive to be a place where people can discover what it is to know God and become a life-long follower of Jesus.

The Lead Pastor Role

The Lead Pastor provides spiritual and operational oversight to all matters of the church and leads the church to be outward bound. The Lead Pastor will work in collaboration with the Church Board (as chairperson) to facilitate the ongoing spiritual health and wholeness of the congregation, provide outreach to the community, and ensure appropriate ministries, programs, leadership structures, and resources are in place to fulfill the mission and vision of the church.

Primary Objectives

  • Serve as spiritual overseer of the congregation and the primary communicator in preaching, teaching and leading.
  • Work closely with the FSPC board and ministry lead team to further the mission and vision of Fort Smith Pentecostal Church
  • Ongoing development and implementation of various ministries & outreach to fulfill the mission and vision of the church to reach lost people and be a disciple-making community
  • Leadership development that trains, equips, and empowers people to serve within the church and in the community 
  • Build and facilitate relationships and partnerships with the community of Fort Smith

Education & Experience

  • Experience working in pastoral ministry with a track record of ministry effectiveness and fruitfulness; committed to ongoing learning and development 
  • Cross-cultural ministry experience, or ability to embrace and gain an understanding of other cultures and people groups, is an asset
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent in related pastoral or theological studies
  • Credentialed or credentiable with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada

Our Lead Pastor Should

  • Be able to connect relationally with others and represent God and the local church with excellence in all settings
  • Have integrity and conviction to Biblical moral absolutes; a Kingdom mindset and passion for reaching lost people
  • Possess excellent communication skills – preaching, teaching, writing & effective listening
  • Be able to lead and shepherd, identify others’ gifts and abilities and cultivate them
  • Communicate effectively with individuals, small groups, and large gatherings within the local church context and the broader community
  • Be organized and able to develop and administer systems to facilitate ministry 
  • Be an individual who can raise up volunteers and lay leadership

Compensation

This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week. The position includes a salary comparable to a similar role within the community, housing, including the cost of utilities, and an extended benefits package. 

Note that all residents of the Northwest Territories also receive an annual Northern Living Allowance.
