We are searching for a strategic, community minded individual with a heart for authentic and purposeful relationships, and a keen ability to deliver on results, to join our team as Chief Financial Officer, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in partnership with the CEO will set Ray of Hope financial policy and direction while also being an active participant on the Executive Management Team. The CFO will lead all financial administration, business planning, and budgeting. As a member of the Executive Management team, the CFO will work closely with a motivated and engaged Board of Directors.
This role participates as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and as such has a shared organizational responsibility to work effectively as a member of the team and develop and carry out Ray of Hope’s Strategic and Annual Plans. The ideal candidate will possess broad finance leadership experience, including experience working with funders along with very strong leadership, team building and decision-making skills.
This is a permanent, salaried, full-time (40 hours per week) position with paid sick time, personal days, vacation time; group health benefits and defined contribution pension plan.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of a Christian not for profit
- Ensure that all program activities operate consistently and ethically within the mission and values of Ray of Hope.
- Provide effective and inspiring leadership, and stewardship of Ray of Hope
- Partner with the CEO on all operational and strategic issues as they arise.
- Provide strategic recommendations to the CEO based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
- Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with Ray of Hope’s strategic plan.
- Engage the Director of Fundraising and Public Relations to align financial management with short- and long-term financial planning and projections.
- Engage the Board Finance and Risk Committee (FARC) around issues, trends, and changes in the operating model and operational delivery.
- Oversee the implementation of budgets, to monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally.
- Ensure that finance staff maintain financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and monitor the use of all funds.
- Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics for funding organizations and Ray of Hope’s board of directors.
- Manage cash flow and forecasting; direct all financial, project-based, and departmental accounting.
- Evaluate and oversee all benefits negotiations, thus providing the most competitive packages for Ray of Hope employees.
- Evaluation of investment options; identifying short- and long-term directions for the organization.
- Meet regularly with program managers to review financial results, educating where necessary to ensure positive fiscal results.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills/Abilities:
- Passionate about Ray of Hope’s mission and able to promote and communicate the philosophy, mission and values of Ray of Hope to external and internal stakeholders
- Demonstrated excellence in managing finance, accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting
- Skill in examining, developing, reengineering, and recommending financial and technology policies and procedures
- Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model
- A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality. Needs to be seen as a team player who is committed to lifelong learning
- A hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission-driven environment
- An effective communicator, with strong oral and written skills
- Strong commitment to developing team members
- Demonstrated commitment to the social sector with a passion for the organization’s mission is essential
- Strategic Vision and Agility-ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan
Education/Experience:
- Undergraduate degree in management/administration, accounting or commerce
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation (or equivalent) is required
- 5 years of broad finance experience, including implementing accounting processes and controls, gathering, evaluating and reporting financial information and making actionable recommendations to leadership teams
- Experience working with funders
- Very strong leadership, team building and decision-making skills required including demonstrated strength in coaching and developing people and teams with at least 3 years previous experience leading a team
- Experience in financial planning, analysis and reporting in a multi service agency including budget preparation, forecasting and program performance analysis
- Experience/knowledge in Payroll and Administration best practices preferred
- Experience identifying and implementing digital tools to grow efficiency and effectiveness of financial reporting, budget and expense access by budget owners

- Rate of Pay: $94,536 – $108,742 annually
When determining rate of pay, a candidate’s past related experience will be taken into consideration.
Working Conditions:
- 40 hours per week, generally daytime, weekday hours
- Very occasional evening work is required to support Ray of Hope and community events
- Hybrid work environment: Work may be performed in a home office for some of the weekly hours
- Travel throughout Waterloo Region
- Encountering participants at program sites who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and/or experiencing symptoms of mental illness can be expected
