Position Description

The Role of our NextGen Pastor:

Hope Community Church has seen encouraging and substantial growth during the last few decades. Although that growth has not always been uniformly distributed across our demographics, the period when we saw the healthiest growth coincided with a time when we had a Youth Pastor as part of the paid staff. As those teenagers became adults, the previous Youth Pastor became more focused on congregational care and community engagement. As we anticipate an increased pastoral need for youth and young adults, HCC is seeking to hire a full-time pastor to provide care, teaching, counselling, and facilitate a healthy community within this context.

Church Profile:

HCC started as a Brethren Assembly in Huntingville. The church moved to a strategic location about 15 years ago to be more present in the community and today owns a building at the main intersection in Lennoxville, just a few minutes’ walk to the university and situated in a perfect place to be right at the heart of the community.

We are technically still a Brethren church, though we are steadily moving toward a tradition best described as “nondenominational”. We’re beginning to hold many traditions more loosely while trying to keep the fundamental things paramount. We frequently describe some of the changes we’re experiencing as “growing pains”.

While our context is the English-speaking community of the Eastern Townships, Quebec is francophone. Living and working here will mean regular interaction with the French language and at least a working knowledge will go a long way toward successful integration.

Leadership Profile:

  • The Pastor will be a devoted and loving follower of Jesus Christ, wholly submitted to Him as Lord of his or her life, modelling a life of prayer, careful study of the Bible, and helping others to grow as disciples of Jesus.
  • The Pastor will have some Biblical or theological education, preferably at least one year at a recognized educational institution.
  • The Pastor will be able to communicate well, be comfortable teaching, be able to handle healthy conflict and function within the broader pastoral staff to advance the mission of HCC.
  • The Pastor will be able to recruit, direct and encourage a team of volunteer leaders.
  • The Pastor will be careful to maintain a healthy balance between personal, family and work commitments.
  • The Pastor will submit to the authority and direction of the Lead Pastor and the HCC Leadership Team, agree to the Code of Conduct for HCC employees and affirm the HCC Statement of Belief.

Compensation: 40k-50k CAD commensurate to education, experience and qualifications.

Areas of Responsibility:

Youth

  • The Pastor will plan and facilitate HCC’s weekly Youth gathering (currently held on Thursday evenings during the school year), including communication, games, teaching, music, and small groups.
  • The Pastor will brainstorm, plan, communicate and execute various activities, events or outings throughout the year.
  • The Pastor will recruit, train, direct and disciple a team of volunteer leaders to assist in all aspects of Youth Group.
  • The Pastor will oversee communication with students whether en masse through social media or Planning Center, or individually like encouraging texts or phone calls to absent students.
  • The Pastor will model good one-on-one and group discipleship relationships with students through contact throughout the week.
  • The Pastor will provide counselling and visitation care when appropriate.
  • Young Adults
  • The Pastor will plan and facilitate HCC’s weekly Young Adults gathering (currently held on Tuesday evenings) including communication, snacks and arranging teaching/discussion.
  • The Pastor will oversee this demographic and the YA team in similar ways to the Youth, as outlined above.

Ministry Staff

  • The Pastor will participate as needed and where appropriate during Sunday morning services.
  • The Pastor will assist the Lead Pastor and Community Pastor in other, less often-scheduled worship services such as weddings, funerals, baptisms or child dedication.
  • The Pastor will assist the Community Pastor and Children’s Pastor in planning and executing seasonal large outreach events (i.e. Block Party, Trunk or Treat, Egg Hunt).
  • The Pastor will perform other duties as assigned to propel the overall mission of HCC.
  • The Pastor will have opportunities to participate in other areas of personal interest, experience or strength.

Organizational Relationships:

  • The Pastor will report directly to the Lead Pastor
  • All Pastoral staff will be accountable to the LT, which will also set the terms of salary and benefits.
  • The Pastor will oversee volunteer teams relevant to their ministry areas of responsibility.
  • The Pastor may be asked to mentor and develop an intern under the direction of the CL Pastor.
