Position Description

Knox United Church-Agincourt is an intercultural community of faith within the United Church of Canada. We are seeking a Chinese Ministry Coordinator to join our staff beginning in early 2026.

Knox is located in Scarborough at the corner of Midland and Sheppard Avenues. The Chinese Ministry began 20 years ago in November 2005. From 2008 to 2019, there was a part time coordinator. Since then, the activities have continued and been organized and carried out by the Chinese Fellowship Group who are an excellent team of volunteers.

It is now time to move to the next stage of this important ministry.

This is a part-time paid position which could be an opportunity for you to engage in a unique ministry.

The Chinese Ministry Coordinator works with the Chinese Fellowship Group to facilitate and coordinate cultural activities. The focus of this person will be to provide spiritual support to the Group and also to reach out to the local community to promote our Chinese Ministry.

This position is accountable to the Church Council through the Minister of Word, Sacrament and Pastoral Care and the Ministry & Personnel Committee of the Church Council.

We are seeking a candidate with a strong Christian faith, a commitment to ministry, and a passion for working with our Chinese community.

The Chinese Ministry Coordinator supports the Chinese Ministry at Knox United Church and works with the Chinese Fellowship to build bridges between the church and the local Chinese community.

The person works with the Chinese Fellowship Group to facilitate and coordinate activities, such as cultural events, and to promote effective communication related to the Chinese members of the congregation.

This role involves providing spiritual support, including Bible Study.

Accountability

This position is accountable to the Church Council through the Minister of Word, Sacrament and Pastoral Care and the Ministry & Personnel Committee of the Church Council.

Responsibilities

Community Engagement:

  • Organize monthly Sunday afternoon Chinese Fellowship gathering.
  • Actively engage with and reach out to the local Chinese community, promoting the church's activities to build connections and partnerships.

Cultural Liaison:

  • Promote cultural sensitivity within the church community to ensure a welcoming environment for Chinese-speaking members.
  • Act as a bridge between the church and the local Chinese community, fostering positive relationships.

Communication / Language Support:

  • Facilitate translation and interpretation services as needed for church services, meetings, and events.
  • Assist Chinese-speaking members with language-related needs, such as filling out forms, understanding church materials, and participating in church activities.
  • Facilitate effective communication between English-speaking and Chinese-speaking church members.
  • Assist with outreach and engagement efforts to connect with new Chinese-speaking members.
  • Translate church materials, announcements, and publications from English to Chinese or vice versa.

Event Coordination:

  • Assist with the planning, organization, and coordination of events that celebrate Chinese Festivals, Bible studies.
  • Collaborate with the church staff to gather church needs and integrate the Chinese Fellowship Group into church activities.

Documentation:

  • Ensure that essential church documents are available in both languages.
  • Provide input to the Knox Annual report as a staff member.

Skills and Experience

  • Must have a theological background. Theological education would be preferred.
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken Mandarin Chinese and English. Cantonese would be an additional benefit.
  • A deep understanding of Chinese culture, customs, and values.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Sensitivity to religious and cultural diversity.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Previous experience in a similar role or in church-related activities is preferred.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the church.
  • Satisfactory police records check.
