Position Description
Overview of the Organization:
Church on the Rock (COTR) is a vibrant church, passionate about reaching and transforming lives on the Hamilton Mountain. Our church is evangelical, Bible-based, and pursuing the leading of the Spirit.
Primary Purpose:
The volunteer director, with support from the camp lead staff team, is responsible for recruiting, training, organizing, and supporting camp volunteers. They are also responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing a Leader-in-Training (LIT) program to develop young leaders (grades 6–8) through hands-on experience, mentorship, and skill-building, preparing them to take on future roles within the camp community.

- Type: The role is a full-time, temporary position of 35 hours per week on average but may vary from week to week, as needed. It is expected that you will manage the variability of this average work week. This contract is for a period of 12 weeks from May 18–Aug 7, 2026.
- Location: Church on the Rock, 1249 Upper James St, Mount Hope, ON.
- Reports to: Camp Director
Main Accountabilities:
- Volunteer Coordination
- Recruit, onboard, train, and schedule volunteers to support daily camp operations.
- Provide clear communication regarding expectations, roles, and responsibilities.
- Offer daily guidance and support to volunteers during camp activities.
- Facilitate regular debriefs, celebrating successes and identifying growth areas.
- Maintain accurate volunteer records including schedules, attendance, and feedback.
- LIT Program Leadership
- Design and deliver leadership development sessions for LIT participants (Grades 6–8).
- Teach teamwork, communication, and camper-support skills through hands-on experience.
- Provide real-time coaching and feedback during activities.
- Support LIT participants in developing confidence, responsibility, and problem-solving skills.
- If an LIT Program Assistant is approved, supervise and mentor them as they assist with program delivery; if not approved, directly manage and execute all LIT programming.
- Team & Camper Support
- Work collaboratively with the Camp Director, Program Director, and program staff to ensure smooth program delivery.
- Help volunteers and LITs support campers with diverse needs, including youth with disabilities.
- Support positive behaviour management and conflict resolution.
- Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure volunteers and LITs understand and follow all safety procedures and protocols.
- Monitor activity areas for safety and accessibility.
- Assist with incident documentation and follow-up.
- Community Engagement & Inclusion
- Build positive relationships with campers, families, and volunteers.
- Promote an inclusive and welcoming environment for youth from diverse backgrounds, including racialized youth, Indigenous youth, and youth with disabilities.
- Represent camp values and foster a culture of encouragement, teamwork, and respect.
- Administration
- Maintain volunteer schedules, attendance records, and program notes.
- Support resource management and ensure volunteer/LIT needs are met.
- Assist with end-of-summer program evaluations.
Experience:
- Experience managing and organizing volunteer teams in a camp or similar environment is an asset.
- Proven experience in team leadership, particularly in youth or ministry contexts, is an asset.
- Experience working with junior high students, preferably in leadership development or mentorship roles.
Interpersonal Skills and Personal Attributes:
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of ages, including youth, adult volunteers, and parents.
- Proven leadership ability, comfortable managing diverse groups and resolving conflicts as they arise.
- A positive role model who can inspire and motivate LIT participants and volunteers.
- Organized and detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple responsibilities while maintaining a supportive environment for volunteers.
