About Matthew House:
Matthew House is a Toronto-based charitable organization providing shelter and settlement support for refugee claimants who arrive in the city fleeing war or persecution.
Matthew House currently operates seven homes in Toronto, including an intake house, homes for unaccompanied youth, and multi-family residences serving vulnerable families and singles. Matthew House is a recognized leader in the Canadian refugee claimant serving sector, regularly engaging with organizations such as the Canadian Council for Refugees to advance the cause of justice for refugees.
For more than 25 years, Matthew House has successfully supported refugee claimants in becoming independent and contributing members of Canadian society. Signature programs—including its home-based settlement model, refugee hearing preparation program, and family houses for unaccompanied youth and other vulnerable people provide individuals and families with the support they need to thrive.
Matthew House was founded on values rooted in the Christian faith. These values continue to guide the organization’s work and community relationships. The Board of Directors is seeking a visionary leader who will champion the next phase of growth and help define the long-term strategic vision for Matthew House.
The Position
The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Matthew House Toronto and works in close partnership with the Board of Directors to advance the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities.
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and sustainability of the organization, ensuring strong operational performance, financial stewardship, and meaningful community impact.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Provide strategic leadership aligned with the organization’s mission and vision
- Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategic plans
- Identify opportunities to expand programs, partnerships, and services
Organizational Management
- Oversee day-to-day operations of programs and services
- Build and lead a high-performing team of staff and volunteers
- Foster a positive and inclusive organizational culture
Governance
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Board and the organization
- Support the Board in fulfilling governance responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational policies
Financial Stewardship
- Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and reporting
- Ensure responsible management of resources
- Strengthen financial sustainability through diversified funding sources
Fundraising and Community Engagement
- Lead fundraising initiatives and donor development strategies
- Build relationships with donors, foundations, government partners, and stakeholders
- Act as a public ambassador for Matthew House
Program Impact
- Ensure programs effectively support refugee claimants in achieving independence
- Identify opportunities to enhance services and respond to emerging needs
- Promote innovative approaches to refugee settlement support
Experience, Skills and Attributes
- Values-driven leader
- 7–10 years of progressive leadership experience in the nonprofit sector
- Minimum 3 years in a senior leadership or Executive Director role
- Strong financial management skills
- Experience leading fundraising initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience working with government funding and managing public funding agreements
- Experience with reporting, compliance, and accountability requirements tied to government funding.
- Ability to build and lead effective teams
- Strong understanding of nonprofit governance
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Strategic thinker capable of balancing operations with long-term planning
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion
Assets
- Experience working with refugee claimants or newcomer communities
- Experience engaging with faith-based communities, including churches and religious organizations, is considered an asset.
- An understanding of, or familiarity with, Christian faith communities and their values is considered an asset.
- Experience in shelter operations or housing services
- Proficiency in a second language
Education
University degree in social work, immigration studies, settlement services, public administration, or a related field.
