Position Description

Contract  (July 1 - April 30) • Open until filled • Starts: ASAP

The Position: 

Redeemer University is seeking two dynamic and Christ-centered leaders to join the Royals Men’s Hockey program as Assistant Coaches of Offensive and Defensive. These positions will support the continued growth and development of a competitive university hockey program while helping foster a distinctive Christian culture that equips student-athletes to share the love and hope of Jesus Christ wherever they are called to compete and serve. Working under the direction of the Director of Hockey and Director of Athletics, the successful candidates will contribute to a program committed to excellence in Christian service, competition, academics, and campus leadership.

- This is a PT Contract role

Responsibilities:

Assistant Coach – Offensive

  • Lead the planning and implementation of offensive systems and player development initiatives, including:
  • Supporting the design and execution of offensive team systems and special teams (power play).
  • Assisting with practice planning and delivery with an emphasis on offensive concepts and execution.
  • Conducting video analysis and contributing to game preparation and opponent scouting.
  • Supporting skill development and individual athlete growth plans.
  • Assisting with bench management and in-game tactical adjustments.

Assistant Coach – Defensive

  • Lead the planning and implementation of defensive systems and player development initiatives, including:
  • Supporting defensive structure, team systems, and special teams (penalty kill).
  • Assisting with practice planning and technical development of defensive play.
  • Conducting game film review and opponent analysis.
  • Supporting athlete development through position-specific coaching.
  • Assisting with bench management and in-game adjustments.

Coaching & Program Support

  • Assist in planning and conducting practices throughout the academic year.
  • Support preparation for competitions including game analysis, video review, and team travel as required.
  • Contribute to athlete development plans in collaboration with the Head Coach and Strength & Conditioning staff.
  • Support a culture of accountability, excellence, and servant leadership.
  • Assist with equipment organization and day-to-day team operations.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of student-athletes during all team activities.

Recruitment

  • Support recruiting initiatives by identifying prospective student-athletes aligned with Redeemer’s mission and Vertical Purpose.
  • Participate in recruiting events, campus visits, and athlete evaluations.
  • Assist with roster management and retention initiatives.

Sport Development

  • Support hockey camps, ID sessions, alumni events, and other program initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with Athletics staff and university departments.
  • Contribute to creating an environment where student-athletes flourish athletically, academically, spiritually, and personally.

Spiritual Leadership

  • Model Christian character in attitudes, words, and actions.
  • Support the spiritual development of student-athletes within Redeemer Athletics’ Vertical Purpose framework.
  • Encourage athletes to pursue excellence as followers of Christ.
  • Participate in opportunities for faith formation and Christian service through sport.

Preferred Skills and Attributes: 

  • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring ability.
  • Strong hockey systems knowledge and tactical understanding.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a coaching staff.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends during season.

Education/Training:

  • College diploma or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of coaching experience at a competitive hockey level preferred.
  • Experience coaching offense or defense at the high school, junior, college, or university level is considered an asset.
  • First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • NCCP Competition Stream certification (or equivalent) preferred.

  • Ability to perform light physical duties including practice setup and equipment movement.
