Position Description

The Ministry Intern will be required to work with full time staff and volunteers in planning various worship services and events. They will participate in worship leadership and planning, develop proficiency in pastoral care and community engagement.

  • The employee(s) will develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills.
  • The employee(s) will also have space to develop other interests and gifts with supervision and coaching. They will be supported, coached and mentored by full time staff, as well as its volunteers.
  • The employee will be required to work as a team with staff and volunteers in planning various summer programs. Some highlights will include summer camps, community surveys, and community engagement events.

Important goals for employee(s) include developing teamwork and leadership skills through leading and organizing worship services, as well as reaching out to the local Port Weller community.

In addition, the Ministry Intern(s) will develop pastoral sensitivity to various pastoral needs including compassion, empathy, mental health, dementia, chronic/acute illness and end-of-life care.

  • Employee(s) will work in collaboration with staff to shape worship services that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the worshipping community while also leading congregants to a broader understanding of who God is and how his love shapes our engagement with society.
  • Employee(s) will have space to develop other interests and gifts with supervision and coaching. The Ministry Intern will be supported, coached and mentored by the full-time staff, as well as its volunteers.

Other special projects may be assigned to employee(s) as their area of interest indicates.

Overall Purpose of Role

In order to enhance the proclamation of God's Word and to enrich the act of worship in an integrated and unified manner the Worship Ministry Intern is to provide musical leadership for the congregation in its life and worship services, nurturing musical gifts and accompanying worship through a variety of musical methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

The Pastor of Worship of Covenant will:

Vision

  • Together with the Worship Ministry Team and Director of worship, inspire, encourage, model and develop vision for worship both through congregational life and in worship services
  • Participate in vision setting and strategy development for Covenant church especially as it relates to worship

Worship Service Planning: Music and Liturgy

  • To work with the pastor(s), Worship Ministry, and volunteers in planning of worship services to develop worship that is biblical, catholic, confessional and pastoral. There are two essential elements to this planning: a) selecting music and b) developing the liturgy. Both are to be developed thematically based on a preaching schedule prepared by the Pastors on a regular basis. The selection of music and liturgy development is to be done in concert with the Pastor responsible for preaching for the given worship service.

Worship Co-Ordination

  • Provide music in worship support to programs related to the ministries of Covenant including Youth Ministry, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School
  • To lead choirs or other instrumental groups, praise teams for worship services
  • Prepare through rehearsals and/or practicing both with teams and personally
  • Attend and be an active contributor to meetings of the Worship Ministry
  • Assist in preparing visual presentations related to worship service ie., music selection, liturgy within the Easy Worship program or other related program and the accompanying print copy for worship service distribution

Leadership Development

  • Provide leadership and support to the volunteers in carrying out their ministry
  • Attends meetings of the Leadership Team

Other Responsibilities

  • Personal and professional development
  • Maintain communications with staff and volunteers to ensure that administrative tasks of the church are carried out in ways that are efficient and fully integrated into the overall ministry of Covenant church
  • Performs such other responsibilities as from time to time are deemed necessary by their supervisor in order to accomplish the role

Young Adult Ministry

  • To assist in leading and giving guidance to the implementation of the Young Adult Ministry mandate
  • Encourage and support leadership involved with the Young Adult Ministry with an objective toward healthy faith formation
  • 0.10 FTE

The Worship Ministry Intern of Covenant will be a person who:

Character

  • Demonstrates an ability to develop relationships and encouraging those with musical talents to utilize their gifts for service
  • A spirit of servant leadership

Competency

  • A demonstrated ability to work with leadership teams
  • A demonstrated ability to work with musical teams and teach and train others
  • A demonstrated competence and skill in leading and accompanying congregational singing with piano, guitar, and/or pipe organ
  • Knowledge of Reformed theological traditional and commitment to work within that tradition
  • Proven interpersonal skills and ability to work with a variety of different people
  • Proven ability to navigate and perform various computer applications related to worship service presentations
  • Able to relate and communicate well and see building relationships as a key to effective ministry
  • Able to work independently and in teams
  • Able to initiate, motivate and prioritize tasks
  • A commitment to developing personal gifts and skills

Prerequisite Requirements

The Worship Ministry Intern of Covenant will:

  • Be sound in their daily walk with God
  • Preferably be working toward a Music or Worship Ministry degree (Bachelor or Masters)
  • Have good inter-personal skills
  • Have the necessary computer application skills

Other Details

  • Full-time summer position for 13wks for 35hrs a week at $18.00 an hour
