Position Description
BFM Foundation (Canada) is a national Christian organization with over 50 Mission Thrift Stores across Canada. The net revenue from all Mission Thrift Stores is devoted to Joint Ministry of BFM Foundation (Canada) and Bible League Canada. These funds are used to establish adult literacy programs, provide church planter training, children’s ministry programs, and distribute Bibles in many places around the world. The stores are operated primarily by dedicated volunteers.
Mission Thrift Store Hamilton is currently seeking a Full-Time Assistant Manager (37.5 hrs/week).
The Assistant Manager will understand and support the vision and purpose of the BFM Foundation (Canada). The ideal candidate is relational, vibrant, passionate, and demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit.
This role requires a solid understanding of the needs and expectations of thrift store customers, along with the ability to deliver exceptional customer service. The successful candidate will also be knowledgeable in inventory control, pricing, health and safety regulations, and will be capable of recruiting, interviewing, and selecting well-qualified staff and volunteers.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
- To assist the manager in the daily operation of the store
- To accept responsibility for certain tasks as assigned by the manager
- To provide managerial responsibilities when the manager is not working
- When the manager’s absence may be lengthy the assistant manager will fill the role of manager in consultation and approval of the board.
ACCOUNTABILITY
The Assistant Store Manager reports to the Store Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Store Manager in overseeing the day to day activities of the store by accepting responsibilities for assigned activities.
- Ensure that an effective plan for scheduling volunteers and cashiers (in consultation with the Head Cashier) is in place to cover each work day, and provide a timely calendar of staffing.
- Work with manager to employ volunteer resources among the various departments and together with manager reassign volunteers as needed or feasible.
- Monitor donated items and ensure they are ready to be sorted and priced daily
- Ensure that sorting area is clean, clear and meets safety standards
- Delegate the workload in the donations area among volunteers
- Work with the Store Manager to develop an annual evaluation to assess the donation area needs and to identify areas for improvement on an ongoing basis
- Assist in recruiting, interviewing and selecting well-qualified staff/volunteers
- Assist the Store Manager with a program of orienting and training volunteers, and help create a positive, cooperative, rewarding work experience for them
- Conduct daily meetings with volunteers and staff for sharing of information, team building and prayer
- Manage weekly, monthly and semi-annual ordering of supplies
- Manage advertising, including social media and make recommendations regarding signage throughout the store
- Ensure Health and Safety within the store and warehouse is in compliance with any government regulations.

The Assistant Store Manager must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:
- Knowledge of office policies and procedures
- Experience with the non-profits/volunteer organizations.
- Experience with retail sales and management, and the rights of a volunteer to equitable and fair treatment.

OTHER EXPECTATIONS
- The Assistant Manager will work 5 days every week, which include some evenings and Saturdays as required.
- The assistant manager will help the cashiers when needed for breaks or during busy times.
- Physical requirements will involve lifting up to 50 lbs from time to time.
- Open and close the store on days when working by securing the doors and the alarm.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position can be physically demanding, requiring standing, walking and lifting for part of the work day.
APPOINTMENT
Upon appointment, the Assistant Store Manager will sign a Management Agreement with the local Mission Thrift Store. In doing so, the Assistant Store Manager agrees to the Foundational Statements of BFM Foundation (Canada) including the Statement of Faith. There will also be a requirement to abide by the policies and procedures of BFM (Hamilton) Enterprises Society.
