Position Description

English Ministry Associate Pastor

Vaughan Community Church English Ministry (VCCEM) is an English-speaking, multi-generational congregation located in Thornhill, ON and is seeking a full-time associate pastor to join its pastoral team. 

The Associate Pastor would be called to serve with a primary focus on young adult ministry.  We want to equip our young adults to grow in their formation as disciples to Jesus Christ, discover all the ways they can bear witness to their faith in the Lord, and find their place in the life of the wider church. 

Additional areas of ministry would include developing VCCEM’s missional expression; preaching and related teaching and program development; leading worship services; participation in the regular life of the church and events alongside congregational members.

The Associate Pastor would be called to serve with the rest of the pastoral team and under the direction of our current English Ministry Lead Pastor.

This is a 3-year contract position with potential to renew to a permanent position. 

Core Responsibilities

  • Leadership of Young Adult Ministry (YAM): planning and execution of programming to help engage members from college-age to late 20s adults.
  • Discipleship, mentorship and pastoral care of students and young adults, with particular attention with YAM leaders.
  • Outreach to disconnected and unintegrated college-aged students in the church (partnerships, programs and campus visits).
  • Assists and works closely with the wider VCC youth group pastoral staff in building a bridge between students in youth group and VCCEM
  • Oversee transitions of graduates of the high school ministry into main EM service and bridging YAM to the wider VCCEM congregation. 
  • Develop missional identity and awareness among the congregation through teaching, programs, and partnerships for VCCEM.
  • Work closely with mission leadership team member / elder and develop mission team at VCCEM
  • Assist in managing existing mission partnerships. 
  • Attendance at Sunday worship, weekly staff meetings with all church staff, and submission of weekly reports outlining activity and plans for ministry.

Skills/Abilities

  • Building and implementation of ministry framework that engages with the challenges and needs of young adults.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong leadership abilities and experience in building, training and maintaining teams.
  • A thoughtful and passionate Christian with a generous orthodox theology.
  • A shepherd’s heart, love for others, a gift for listening, empathy, and remaining calm in a crisis.
  • Ability to work unsupervised often, and yet function as a part of our larger staff and pastoral team.
  • Other pastoral and ministry leadership, as required.
  • Organized and able to juggle multiple tasks/priorities.
  • Clear written and verbal communication in English (Korean or additional languages are an asset).
  • Comfortable engaging in large and small social settings with appropriate levels of confidence/intimacy.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Products (i.e., Gmail, Google Drive, Forms, Hangout, etc.) are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Strong ministry experience with young adults or university-aged ministry.
  • Preference for a completed MTS/MDiv/MRE from an ATS seminary, optionally eligible for ordination within the Presbyterian Church of Canada.
  • Allowed to work in Canada. 
  • Valid police check required. 
  • Access to a vehicle preferred.
