Position Description

Volunteer Opportunity for Seminary Students

  • Position: Food Bank / Soup Kitchen Facility Assistant
  • Location: The Sharing Place Toronto @ Grace Church of the Nazarene, Toronto, Ontario
  • Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays (8am to 8pm)
  • Commitment: Minimum one-year commitment required

Calling Seminary Students

The Sharing Place Toronto is inviting seminary and theological students who feel called to practical ministry, service and outreach to join us as a Food Bank / Soup Kitchen Facility Assistant. This volunteer role offers hands-on experience in faith-based community service and provides opportunities to live out the Gospel through consistent and compassionate action.

About The Sharing Place Toronto

The Sharing Place Toronto is a faith-rooted, community-based ministry dedicated to serving individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, poverty and isolation. We seek to reflect Christ’s love through hospitality, dignity, practical care and building relationships that foster hope and belonging.

Ministry Role Overview

This role supports the daily operations of our food bank and soup kitchen and is integral to maintaining a welcoming, organized and respectful environment for all guests. Consistency is essential, which is why a one-year commitment is required.

Ministry Responsibilities

  • Administrative and Pastoral Support
  • Respond to emails and voicemails
  • Register guests and volunteers with care and confidentiality
  • Maintain accurate records to support ministry operations
  • Communicate respectfully with volunteers, guests and community partners

Facility and Program Ministry

  • Food Room: manage inventory and coordinate food pickups
  • Clothing Room: organize and maintain clothing inventory
  • Assist with the set-up and tear-down of soup kitchen breakfast and dinner services
  • Support the scheduling of cooks and volunteers
  • Confirm and distribute monthly schedules
  • Outreach and Faith-Based Engagement
  • Assist with creating flyers and social media posts that reflect the mission and values of the ministry
  • Support digital outreach through short videos and online engagement
  • Help promote ministry programs, special events and volunteer opportunities

Ideal Candidate

  • Currently enrolled in a seminary or theological program
  • Able to commit to Tuesdays and Thursdays for a minimum of one year
  • Demonstrates a heart for service, hospitality and relational ministry
  • Organized, reliable and attentive to detail
  • Comfortable serving individuals from diverse and vulnerable backgrounds
  • Basic computer skills required; social media experience is an asset
  • G - Class drivers license is an asset

Formation and Experience Gained

  • Practical ministry experience in a faith-based outreach setting
  • Opportunities for spiritual formation through service
  • Exposure to community-based pastoral and social ministry
  • Volunteer hours and documentation (if required by your institution)
  • A supportive, prayerful and mission-driven environment
