Position Description

South Vancouver Pacific Grace Mennonite Brethren Church (SVPGMBC) is an evangelical church in Vancouver, BC. We are a member of the Canadian Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches and British Columbia Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches.  

We are currently seeking a Children’s Pastor who will lead our Children’s Ministry (newborn to seventh grade) by integrating Christian values and beliefs into dynamic children’s programs. This ministry will shape our next generation in accordance with the Bible and the church’s vision and mission.  

Position Summary: The primary responsibility of the Children’s Pastor is to create a safe environment where children discover and grow closer to Jesus. A children’s pastor would lead children into a dynamic relationship with Jesus and disciple them in the Christian walk.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Children ministry
    1. Create/organize Sunday curriculum
    2. Teach classes as needed
    3. Encourage and recruit volunteers and team leaders
      1. Fill volunteer positions through recruitment and training
      2. Support and equip volunteers by providing encouragement, resources, feedback, and demonstrations of appreciation
      3. Maintain volunteer contact information, applications, and background checks
    4. Create/organize community outreach and events throughout the year
    5. Ensure safety and risk management standards are implemented and maintained, including prevention training
  2. Pastoral Care for children, parents, and leaders
    1. Connect with parents on Sundays and midweek
    2. Participate in church events to connect with children, their families, and caregivers
    3. Preach during Sunday Services
  3. Support and Administration
    1. Attend staff and church meetings
    2. Check and promptly respond to emails, voicemails, and mail received
    3. Cooperate with pastoral team in church activities and other required responsibilities
    4. Ensure thorough and efficient communication with admin staff and parents
    5. Provide guidance and support for interns
    6. Maintain a Children’s Ministries Manual with policies and procedures
    7. Create and oversee the Children’s ministry budget, recording expenditures

Knowledge and Skills

  1. A deep understanding of the Bible
  2. Skilled in communication and managing diverse teams
  3. Planning, organizing, and coordinating work for staff and/or volunteers
  4. Ability to recruit, develop, motivate and supervise volunteers
  5. Ability to support new initiatives and changing ministerial responsibilities
  6. Ability to work with children with diverse and special needs
  7. Demonstrate professional ethics, principles and a Christ-like attitude
  8. Have working knowledge of child protection, health, and safety issues
  9. Proficient in IT – MS Office, Google Drive and Docs, and up-to-date social media platforms and communication tools
  10. Time management skills and the ability to work under time constraints and deadlines
  11. Reliability, accuracy, confidentiality, tact, diplomacy and proven interpersonal skills
  12. Ability to maintain family life and church life in a healthy balance

  1. Spiritual Focus: To live an authentic and growing Christian life through the practice of spiritual disciplines, and dependence on the Holy Spirit, with consistent evidence of the fruits of the spirit
  2. Church Focus: Ability and willingness to align with the overall vision and goals of SVPG and its lead pastor

  5. Developing others: Genuine interest to foster development of others through coaching, supervising performance and mentoring
  6. Flexibility: Willingness to adapt and to work effectively within a variety of diverse situations, teachable. A servant-hearted attitude to adapt as ministry needs evolve, including supporting responsibilities that may extend beyond the initial job description
  7. Relationship Building: Able to establish and build rapport with others within the overall objectives of the ministry
  8. Accountability: Setting of high standards of performance and holding team members, and others accountable for results and action, showing integrity

Qualifications

  1. Post Secondary Diploma, Degree from Bible School or Equivalent, early childhood education certificate or courses, Children’s leadership courses or other related courses are an asset
  2. Ministerial Credentials with BCMB (either possess or be willing to possess within a year)
  3. Embrace MB Conference Confession of Faith

Experience

  • 3 – 5 years ministry or equivalent experience
  • Ministry in a congregation
  • Supervisory/Staff Leadership
  • Communication – pulpit and/or significant public speaking
  • Worship/music oversight or ability is an asset

Salary & Benefits

  1. Working hours is 40-hour per week with a requirement to work evenings and weekends. There will be a six-month probation period.
  2. Salary is based on experience and education; the salary range for this position is $41,600 - $62,400.
