Position Description

At The Peoples Church, our desire is to grow the body of Christ for God’s global mission. We want our congregation to experience Christ, to embrace community and engage their world. It is to that end that the Youth Pastor is passionate about seeing youth develop their relationship with Jesus and be on mission with Him. This person will be responsible for the development and oversight of our Jr. Youth (Grade 6-8) and Sr. Youth (Grade 9-12) ministries. Under the leadership of the Congregational Life Pastor and supported by a team of volunteers and lay leaders, the Youth Pastor will be responsible for the development and oversight of our ministry to middle school and high school students, reaching out, teaching, and discipling this transitional generation of youth.

The Youth Pastor will work closely with the Children’s Pastor to plan and implement youth and family related ministry opportunities and to minister effectively to youth to see them thriving in faith and achieving the mission and vision of The Peoples Church. She/he will ensure effective organization of ministry activities on Sundays and Fridays, and other special events such as retreat, missions, summer camps, leadership development and focused parent training and coaching in collaboration with adult ministries. The Youth Pastor must be prepared to fill in when necessary and assist with keeping watch over the flock and coordinating various programs and meetings. The Youth Pastor is expected to teach, reach out, and minister to all youth, strategize and develop programming under the direction of the Congregational Life Pastor.

Major Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive strategy to strengthen our ministry to youth in order to raise a generation of gospel-centered, globally minded Christians.
  • Oversee, develop, and grow (both qualitatively and quantitatively) our ministry to students by connecting and interacting with them through regular gatherings, Life Groups, and local and global involvement.
  • Work closely with our Newcomers Pastor to serve youth who are new to Canada, ensuring that they are welcome and engaged in The Peoples Church community.
  • Strategize, implement, and oversee the global engagement of our youth, in partnership with our Global Missions department.
  • Recruit, equip, and enable volunteers and lay leaders to share in the leadership of the youth ministry, personally overseeing their growth, development and performance, supporting them in the development of a Biblical worldview and the integration of faith and life.
  • Seek to move youth, both churched and un-churched, along our discipleship pathway, helping them experience Christ, embrace community, and engage with all aspects of church life, both locally and through our global partners.

Pastoral Care and Shepherding Youth

  • Provide pastoral care and spiritual direction to youth both in large groups and individual settings, ensuring congruency with the overall Life group and community engagement strategy of the church.
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of youth and family related ministry opportunities, in collaboration with TPC Children’s Ministry, ensuring alignment with the overall vision of the church.
  • Oversee small groups of young leaders and hold them accountable for their daily duties, including:
    • The development of student leadership
    • Student recruitment
    • Evaluation of student progress
  • Lead weekly youth meetings where our youth are inspired to live gospel-centered and globally engaged lives.
  • Develop engaging and interactive initiatives for Sundays, ongoing outreach, student leadership, special events, trips, and retreats.
  • Mobilize, equip, and oversee volunteers, supervise other youth ministry staff, and establish clear ministry goals while providing on-going evaluation.
  • Be committed to the whole person development of each young person by creating opportunities for them to maintain a healthy mind, body, and spirit.
  • Provide an opportunity for every youth to be part of a mission trip before they graduate high school in collaboration with the Global Missions department.
  • Foster strong relationships with the children’s ministry, assisting 5th grade students to transition well into middle school.
  • Liaising with adult ministries for volunteer recruitment and pastoral care.

Administration

  • Develop the mission and vision for TPC Youth Ministry in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of The Peoples Church
  • Engage and interact with parents to educate and provide resources for the spiritual growth and development of junior high and high school students
  • Assist in the development and management of the youth ministry expenses
  • Maintain and further develop ongoing partnerships with parents, vested congregational members, and various youth organizations
  • Participate in weekly team meetings as required
  • Complete administrative tasks related to youth programs
  • Maintain healthy work relationships with others and liaise with parents
  • Promote spiritual growth among themselves and other youth
  • Other duties as assigned by the Congregational Life Pastor.

Qualifications

  • Must have a deep growing personal faith in Jesus Christ and support the Statement of Faith of The Peoples Church
  • A passion to help all youth discover Jesus through worship and scripture
  • Proven ability to supervise volunteers and raise youth leaders
  • Displays strong moral character, integrity above reproach and honesty
  • Minimum 5 years of next generation, transitional or outreach ministry experience
  • College Diploma or University Degree preferred
  • Passionate and intuitive about the development, growth and thought processes of teens
  • Experienced in working in an environment that is both culturally and ethnically diverse.
  • A good understanding of issues pertaining to the interface between faith and culture
  • Technologically Savvy
  • Skilled in organization, effective in communication and proficient in youth curriculum design
  • Proven ability to develop strong relationships with parents, youth, and various organizations
  • Strong communication, time management and organization skills
  • Ability to plan, develop, organize, and carry out ministry programs effectively
  • Creative thinker, who is a team player with a positive attitude
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certifications an asset

Working Conditions:

  • Evenings and weekends are required.
  • Occasional weekend shift may be required
