Position Description

  • Position Title: Refugee Support Worker (Frontline case management support for welcome team) 
  • Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
  • Location: Toronto - Onsite with local community travel
  • Salary Range: $48,000 – $60,000 per year (commensurate with education and experience) with benefits package and sick time

Matthew House Toronto welcomes newly arrived refugee claimants (asylum seekers) to Toronto/Canada. With a community of seven homes in Toronto, Matthew House was established in response to the enormous need for decent and appropriate shelter for refugee claimants. Since opening in 1998, we have assisted approximately 2,000 refugee claimants from over 100 countries. We welcome refugees regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, or political opinion. 

We are a Christian-based non-profit focusing on reception services and transitional housing for vulnerable refugees and welcome all faiths and traditions to our community. We are seeking a caring, organized, resilient welcome team member to team to join our staff and make a significant difference in new refugees’ lives. In this fast-paced, high-impact role you will offer immediate, trauma-informed system navigation and case management  support, guiding refugee claimants towards community integration. 

Qualifications we look for:

  • University degree or college diploma in social work, occupational therapy or another related field 
  • A clear Vulnerable Persons’ Screening background check
  • Experience in frontline case management or refugee resettlement support
  • Strong system navigation skills for refugee claimant pathways, social assistance programs, community and housing supports
  • Training and experience in providing trauma-informed care and anti-oppressive practice
  • Excellent communication skills in English 
  • Trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, cultural humility approach
  • Highly motivated creative problem solving team player
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Commitment to Matthew House vision, mission and values

Other Assets:

  • Fluency in a second language is a significant asset.
  • A passionate learner and advocate.
  • Knowledge of crisis-prevention and intervention strategies.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR training

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide regular case management and goal-setting support to residents (newly arrived refugee claimants/asylum seekers)
  • System navigation
  • Provide transitional support, referrals and advocacy for clients moving out of the shelter and into the community.
  • Educate and assist residents with their housing search - accompany them to housing appointments when necessary.
  • Support with conflict resolution when this arises 
  • Crisis support/psychological first aid 
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation of all interactions with/on behalf of residents
  • Liaise with other service  partners and referral agencies especially in the area of ESL, health and wellness (dentist, doctor, midwife, psychological/counselling referrals)
  • Advocate for residents’ needs and liaise with other service providers to ensure the best possible solutions are found.
  • Maintain resident database.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures and best practices, including health and safety and incident reporting
  • Assist with other administrative duties as needed and support Matthew House events.
